The Handmade Process

Every Sleepy Gorgon sculpture piece is lovingly hand-made by human hands (not gorgon-frozen, we promise). The process begins with a clay master sculpt, which is then molded in silicone and cast using a strong gypsum cement (also called plaster).

These statues have the strength to stand or hang as a display piece, while also retaining the fine details captured by the molding process. The end result is a finished texture that looks and feels like stone.

(And now for some sciency bits) -- Plaster is calcined gypsum, which is mined mineral gypsum that has undergone a dehydration/heating process. When re-hydrated, it bonds together and cures to a solid rock-hard state.

The plaster powder and casting materials that we use are sourced from U.S. manufacturers, and every item for sale in the shop is handmade from beginning to end.

Art & Sustainability

Our goal is to be a company in which all of our materials, methods, and packaging are reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable. We are always looking for new ways to make our process more ecologically sound, so if you have any suggestions, please let us know! Currently, we are using artist-grade acrylic paints on our painted pieces, but hope to move towards more naturally-drying pigments in the future.
